TOURISM MARKETING AND EVENTS SPECIALIST

Organization: The Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce

Reports To: Director, Oshawa Tourism

Location: Oshawa, Ontario

About Oshawa Tourism

Oshawa Tourism is a service delivered to the City of Oshawa through a contract between the City and the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce dedicated to promoting and enhancing tourism in the vibrant city of Oshawa, Ontario. Our mission is to showcase Oshawa as a premier destination, offering unique experiences, cultural diversity, and exciting events to residents and visitors alike. We seek a Tourism Marketing and Events Specialist to help us effectively communicate with our audience, promote local events, and support our tourism initiatives.

Job Summary

The Oshawa Tourism Communications and Events Specialist is a pivotal role within the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce and is responsible for coordinating the communication and event strategies that promote Oshawa as a destination for tourism, culture, and community engagement. This position will oversee social media coordination, content creation, event planning, and strategic partnership development to support Oshawa Tourism’s goals.

Key Responsibilities

Communications and Marketing

  • Social Media Management:
    Coordinate all social media channels, including Oshawa Tourism, Oshawa Holiday Experience, and Convergence Oshawa, ensuring consistent, engaging, and high-quality content aligned with brand guidelines.
     

  • Work Assignment and Review:
    Assign work, provide editing support, and manage the staging process for all communications created by Tourism Communications and Event Coordinator, as well as student employees.
     

  • Content Creation:
    Draft, submit for approval, and deploy monthly B2B and B2C newsletters, press releases, presentations, and speaking notes to promote tourism initiatives and community engagement.
     

  • Brand Promotion:​​
    Develop messaging and supporting strategies to increase awareness of Oshawa Tourism’s initiatives, including its signature events and partner programs.
     

  • Stakeholder Communication:​​
    Collaborate with local businesses, community organizations, and municipal stakeholders to align communication efforts with broader city initiatives.

Event Management

  • Signature Events:
    In collaboration with the Director, contribute to the planning, development, and execution of all Oshawa Tourism signature events, such as the Oshawa Santa Claus Parade of Lights, Convergence Music and Art Festival, and Oshawa Holiday Experience.

  • Community Events:
    Support and participate in community-facing partner events, ensuring the presence and promotion of Oshawa Tourism’s brand.

  • Logistics and Execution:
    Oversee all aspects of event logistics, including vendor and volunteer coordination, marketing, and on-site operations.

  • Performance Metrics:​​
    Track and report on event success metrics, including attendance, engagement, and economic impact.

Partnership Development

  • Strategic Collaboration:
    Identify and cultivate partnerships with local businesses, cultural organizations, and other stakeholders to enhance Oshawa Tourism’s programming and community impact.
     

  • Sponsorships:
    With the support of the director, develop unique partnership packages and negotiate agreements to secure funding and support for events and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Event Management, Public Relations, or a related field.

  • Experience: 

    - Minimum 5–7 years of experience in communications, event management, or tourism.

    - Demonstrated experience managing social media channels and creating compelling digital content.

    - Proven ability to manage large-scale events and coordinate with multiple stakeholders.

  • Skills: 
    - Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience drafting press releases, presentations, and newsletters.
    - Excellent organizational and project management skills.
    - Proficiency in social media platforms, email marketing tools, and basic graphic design software.
    - Relationship-building and networking capabilities.

  • Attributes:
    - Creative and proactive problem-solver.
    - Passion for community engagement and tourism development.

Working Conditions

This role offers a flexible hybrid work environment with a combination of remote and in-office work. While the position generally follows standard business hours, the successful candidate must be available to work evenings and weekends as required for events and activations. These events are a key part of the role, and scheduling will reflect the need for on-site presence during these times.

Compensation

  • Pay Rate: Based on education and experience

  • Benefits: Comprehensive benefits package and RRSP matching up to 3%.
