Well, the well that is Oshawa’s music scene keeps pumping out talent. Yes, even in the middle of Winter, there are reasons to visit 'Shwa Rock City and the downtown core, home to so many venues of all descriptions.
The new kid on the block is the King’s Crown at 28 King St. E., Oshawa. It has been renovating its interior, creating a listening room and a redesigned dining area. The stage will feature many of Oshawa’s singer-songwriters presenting their own work and crowd-pleasing covers. On Wednesday, there will be an Open Mic, while on Friday and Saturday, there will be artist spotlight nights.
The line-up for this month is as follows: Friday, February 7, Homestead Elite; Saturday, February 8, Greg Cave; Friday, February 14, Jeremy Joseph; Saturday, February 15, Kevin McKendrick & Sue Latimer; Friday, February 21, Marie Dore; Saturday, February 22, Adam Devries; and finally, on Friday, February 28, Adam Till.
Much of the booking of King’s Crown is done by local promoter Crosswalk Entertainment, who also hosts a regular Songs and Story Night at The Atria on Tuesdays and brings in artists to the Snack Bar at Bond|St Event Centre on weekends.
Continuing the live music offerings during the shortest month of the year, on Saturday, February 8, the Biltmore Theatre is hosting an all-local metal and rock show with My Own Addiction, Valyear, Byrdy, and Dead Silence because Shwarock City Baby!
One of Canada’s great guitarists is Jack De Keyzer, a Whitby resident and a chap who has won almost everything. He is a two-time Juno winner and seven-time Maple Blues Award winner, has several albums under his belt and is an alumnus of The Hawks, Ronnie Hawkins's backing band. De Keyzer is playing at the historic Jubilee Pavilion in Lakeview Park on Saturday, February 15.
Also that night, the country duo Brothers Wilde will be at the Biltmore Theatre. The Brothers Wilde are Nolan and Ethan from the Kettle & Stony Point First Nation. Local lad Tyler Lorette, who is no slouch in the country department, opens.
Over at The Bond|St Event Centre on Thursday, February 13, Country leads the line-dancing line-up with Aaron Goodvin with River Town Saints and, on February 28, Eli Young with Hailey Benedict and Alexa Goldie. Both shows are on the Main Stage.
The Regent Theatre has February full of tribute acts to the greats across the eras: Saturday, February 8, Southern Rock Experience - Featuring Symply Skynyrd plus ZZ Top Experience; Thursday, February 13, Solitary Man - The Definitive Neil Diamond Tribute; Friday, February 14, Jersey Nights - A Valentines Tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons; and on Saturday, February 15, The Concert Version of 'A Tribute to Grease and the Music of the '50s & 60's'.
The Regent Theatre is also home to the Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra, and on February 22, the remarkable Chinese pianist Zee Zee will make her debut with the Ontario Philharmonic, performing Liszt’s 2nd Piano Concerto.
And you thought you would stay in this February. Ha! Not in Oshawa, there’s always something.
