One Bite from Avanti Trattoria, and You're in Italy!

Will Ellis

I recently found myself out and about in Oshawa, where I had the pleasure of attending a delightful event to kick off the Holiday Season. And guess what? I was treated to a complimentary lunch at the fabulous Avanti Trattoria! Let me tell you, that meal has been dancing around in my mind for nearly a month, and as soon as the New Year rolled in, I knew I had to return for another round of culinary excellence.

Now, if you haven't heard of Avanti Trattoria, let me fill you in. This gem has been an Oshawa staple for years, and trust me, it’s not just the nostalgia talking! From my very first bite, I was reminded of why this place has stood the test of time. The trifecta of great food, reasonable prices, and a warm, inviting atmosphere make it a must-visit. Seriously, what more could you ask for?

Where do I even begin? If you know me, you know that I have a soft spot for calamari. It's my go-to appetizer, and I can confidently say I’ve sampled it from every nook and cranny in the City! But let me tell you, the calamari at Avanti is something special. The moment it arrived, I was smitten. It’s like they say: you eat with your eyes first, and this dish was a feast for the senses!

The calamari was lightly battered and fried to crispy perfection, creating a delightful crunch with every bite. It is served alongside a chilled arrabbiata sauce and a zesty tartar that complements the dish beautifully. Each piece tasted so fresh—I could hardly contain my excitement!

Now, I couldn’t resist trying the Romaine salad; let me tell you, it was an absolute revelation! The presentation was unique and playful, making it feel like a work of art on my plate. Drizzled with a creamy garlic dressing and adorned with crunchy crostini and a sprinkle of grana padano, this salad was a showstopper.

Every bite was a burst of freshness, and the dressing tasted like it was made right in the kitchen—homemade goodness at its finest! You can tell that the staff at Avanti take great pride in their creations, and it really shines through in this salad.

Next up was the Penne Con Pollo, a pasta dish that has quickly climbed the ranks to become one of my all-time favourites! Picture this: al dente penne pasta embraced by tender julienne chicken, earthy mushrooms, sweet onions, sun-dried tomatoes, vibrant spinach, and a luscious pesto cream.

Each bite was nothing short of a flavour explosion! The chicken was cooked to perfection—not a hint of dryness in sight. The sun-dried tomatoes mingled effortlessly with the perfectly cooked pasta, creating a symphony of flavours that left me grinning.

Now, let’s talk about the overall experience. The service was delightful—no rushed meals here! I was able to savour each dish, taking my sweet time between courses. It’s like they understood that good food deserves to be enjoyed, not just devoured!

The staff was not only friendly but also impressively knowledgeable about the menu. Their recommendations were spot-on, enhancing my dining experience even further. And let’s not forget the price—reasonable for the generous portions and the food quality!

If you’re new to the area or simply on the hunt for a fantastic restaurant for any occasion, do yourself a favour and check out Avanti! Trust me, your taste buds will thank you.
