The Sounds of October in Oshawa

The City of Oshawa’s annual celebration of culture, the Convergence Music & Art Festival, may have folded up the tents for another year, but the culture doesn’t stop. It's ongoing, always on, always present, with music right through the downtown core and across the city at large.

The Tribute Communities Centre, home to the Oshawa Generals, will do its internal origami and transform into a music venue on Friday, October 25 to welcome country music star Lainey Wilson on her ‘Country’s Cool Again Tour,’ with guests Ian Munsick and Zach Top.

Lainey Wilson
Catch Lainey Wilson at The Tribute Communities Centre on Friday, October 25.

Now, for some of us here in the great City of Oshawa, country music was never not cool, but it has to be said there’s a bit of a bigger focus on the genre at the moment, what with Beyonce, Shaboozey, Orville Peck and Post Malone rustling the tail feathers of Nashville. Lainey Wilson appears on Post Malone’s latest album, on the duet, ‘Nosedive.’ Wilson also has tracks with Jelly Roll and Cole Swindell and has appeared in the TV series Yellowstone, so it’s a big deal to have this rising star stop by Oshawa. Get ready to kick up some dirt.

Back to cool country for a moment. Oshawa’s very own country cool cats, Cuff The Duke, have a new album, ‘Breaking Dawn,’ out, their first in a decade. They are coming home on Saturday, October 12, for an intimate show at the equally cool Frere Du Nord, a company located in Downtown Oshawa that manufactures its clothing from start to finish and has produced some special merch items for the band.

Cuff The Duke
Oshawa's own Cuff The Duke returns on Saturday, October 12 for an intimate performance at Frere Du Nord.

You should stick around that night for a night of dancing as DJ Domin8t kicks it at the Biltmore Theatre for his Thanksgiving Party. One should note that Domin8t is a member of the great team behind the Convergence Music & Art Festival mentioned above, as artists in Oshawa don’t only make things, they also make things happen.

That’s a good weekend to book an overnight as there are some cool happenings; Evan Rotella is back in at the Local Lounge at the Bond Street Events Centre on Friday, October 11, and on Monday, October 14, at Canadian Songwriters Hall of Famer Tom Cochrane is performing at the Regent Theatre. His track ‘Human Race’ is enough of a reason to give thanks.

Also at the Regent, another great Canadian act, Goddo, will be playing a special Halloween show on October 31 for those who don’t trick or treat. Goddo is one of those Cancon acts everyone knows as he seems to have played all the high schools when that was a possibility with his blend of chugging riffs, leering prog and then punk at times, and ‘Sign on the Line’ could be an Oasis track. Go take a listen.

Skye Wallace The Act of Living
Skye Wallace is headlining The Biltmore Theatre on Wednesday, October 23, in support of her new album.

Skye Wallace, who will be releasing her fine new album soon, is on her The Act of Living tour and in at the Biltmore Theatre on Wednesday, October 23. Skye has roots in the neighbouring town of Whitby and has played Oshawa many times. Ash Molloy of Newfoundland will open.

Although there’s a host of country music travelling through Oshawa, the metalheads also have their own shows, with prog metal act Maitreya releasing their EP ‘Auxesis’ at the Biltmore on October 17 with guests Visions of Morpheus, Please Stand By, and Wolves on Tape.

Finally, the month ends at The Biltmore on October 31 with a showing of the Rocky Horror Show. So, for those who experienced Convergence, a gathering of Oshawa’s broad range of cultural expressions, it is important to note that expression is not a one-day event for the great City of Oshawa; that's how it is every day.
