X-citing times in Oshawa as the city joins the list of host cities for spreading ideas, which is the TEDx experience. The Biltmore Theatre in Downtown Oshawa will host this inaugural TEDx event on Saturday, June 8, 2024. This is an afternoon event running from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that gathers people for a TED-like experience. TED (Technology, Education, Design) is a non-profit international organization which posts talks online for free. Participants come from all over the globe and from all backgrounds and disciplines to discuss and spread ideas. Speakers have included Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Bono and hundreds of others all with ideas to share and spread.
The Oshawa conference is titled Shaping Tomorrow: Connecting Cultures, Ideas and Innovations and features presentations from 16 different professionals, including (but not limited to): ‘the Bag Lady of Bay Street’ Sandra Pierce on "The Great Wealth Transfer: What It Means for Women"; Ojibwe and Cree spoken word poet, activist, community organizer and mother from Curve Lake First Nation, Sarah Lewis on “Divine Woman”; host of the podcast: Power To The People Pleasers,’ Amy Ballantyne, on "Beyond the Balance Myth: Rethinking Work-Life Harmony"; Richard Harbridge on "AI and Us: Shaping Tomorrow with Positive Intent"; Dr. Christine Gibson on "How to feel safe when the world is on fire" Atif Rashid on "Emotional Poverty"; Dr. Collette Wayne, founder of Oceans of Grace on "How the ‘turtleness’ of a turtle can save humanity"; and co-organiser Zehra Mahoon’s topic is "Never step outside your comfort zone" and many more!
Plan the TEDx event around a visit to Oshawa’s award-winning Peony Festival on June 8 and 9. This free festival features over 300 curated peonies in the Oshawa Valley Botanical Garden and The Michael and Judi Denny Peony Garden. It will also feature live music performances, food vendors, and an artisan market.
A block north of the Oshawa Valley Botanical Garden is the historic Parkwood Estates, which hosts tours and has one of the City's best secret dining spots, a Tea House. Parkwood was home to Col. Sam McLaughlin, no slush in the innovation world himself, as he founded General Motors Canada.
The McLaughlin name is associated with other historical sites throughout the city. Notably, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery which has one of the best collections of Painters Eleven works and exciting innovative programming and art curation. While the exhibit by mixed Kanien’kehá:ka beadworker Raechel Wastesicoot closes June 9, there are others, including Painters Eleven: The Greenberg Effect, an exhibit based around the visit by then-noted American art critic to the studios of the Painters Eleven in Toronto and surrounding areas.
Later in the month, on Sunday, June 16, Oshawa’s Folk Arts Council will mark 50 years of its signature event, Fiesta Week, which celebrates the city’s multicultural heritage. Cultural communities from across the city will gather at Memorial Park for traditional food and entertainment. One can enjoy fare from Portugal, the Caribbean, Ukraine, Romania, Poland, and many others. This is one of Oshawa’s unique and one of its most popular events. The festivities continue throughout the following week at the various home halls for the cultural communities involved.
While the theme of TEDx is Connecting Cultures, Ideas and Innovations, the City of Oshawa has been doing just that for decades already.
